During my last stay on Mykonos, I had the opportunity to test the vegan hotel Koukoumi: a hotel that impresses not only with its luxury, but also with its consistent focus on sustainability and a vegan lifestyle.
In this article I report on my stay and personal experiences.
Location and atmosphere
The Koukoumi Hotel is located away from the hustle and bustle in the tranquil village of Ano Mera. From Mykonos airport, where I flew from Frankfurt with miles, you can reach the hotel by car in about 20 minutes.
The location is absolutely quiet, but therefore also somewhat remote. I therefore highly recommend a scooter or rental car. There is little to discover on foot in the vicinity of the hotel. Even the nearest beaches are barely a 30-minute walk away.

The hotel itself was built with great attention to detail by the three daughters of the local Kontizas family, right next to the remains of their grandmother’s house. You can feel this personal touch everywhere in the hotel.
Koukoumi: Individual suites
The Koukoumi offers 14 suites, each with an individual design. During my stay, I stayed in the master suite with terrace and jacuzzi and was impressed by the combination of modern comfort and traditional Mykonian architecture.

The furnishings are stylish and it quickly becomes clear that great attention has been paid to detail here.
The room was on the first floor, so unfortunately there was no nice view from the terrace. I would recommend the 1st floor so that you can enjoy the view instead of the straw mat.

Restaurant: Vegan and refined
A particular highlight was eating at the Koukoumi Plant Based Restaurant. The hotel restaurant serves exclusively plant-based dishes – from breakfast to dinner.
Even though I am not vegan, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of the food. The restaurant has now developed into a gourmet meeting place, and rightly so.

Each dish was an experience in itself, with fresh ingredients and creative preparations that would satisfy even the most discerning palate.
Focus on sustainability
The Koukoumi’s commitment to the environment runs through all areas of the hotel. Using organic products and supporting local producers are just some of the measures the hotel has taken to minimize its ecological footprint.
Particularly noteworthy is the biological wastewater treatment, which reuses the water for watering the garden.
The use of solar panels and environmentally friendly detergents also shows that Koukoumi sees sustainability not just as a trend, but as a central part of its philosophy.
Wellness at the Koukoumi Hotel
The Koukoumi offers its guests more than just the usual spa experience. The hotel’s spa area is equipped with Greek, certified organic herbal products and offers a wide range of treatments – from massages to facials and body therapies.
I particularly enjoyed the magnesium pool, which is not only good for the skin but also environmentally friendly.

Those who want to harmonize body and mind can also take part in yoga classes or meditation sessions offered at the hotel.
Consistently vegan concept
The vegan concept of the Koukoumi is consistently implemented in every respect. From the absence of animal products in the kitchen to the use of vegan materials in the hotel furnishings – nothing has been left to chance here.

This certainly requires a lot of planning and commitment, especially in a country like Greece where the market for vegan products is not yet so developed. But the result is impressive: A hotel that is not only ethically convincing, but also aesthetically and functionally at the highest level.
Beaches around the Koukoumi Hotel
As the island of Mykonos is generally quite small, most of the beaches can be reached quickly by car or scooter. I booked a small car with SIXT and chose Fokos Beach as my absolute favorite beach.

Fokos beach is in the far north, very quiet and secluded with crystal clear water and lots of colorful fish. I have hardly seen any other beach in Europe with such clear water.
Elia Beach is just 5 minutes away from the hotel. Also very beautiful, but much more crowded. This is mainly where the gay community meets, there are comfortable beach loungers and even a service that brings drinks and snacks directly to your lounger.

The vegan Koukoumi Hotel is worth it
My stay at Koukoumi impressed me in many ways. It is not just a hotel, but a place where you can immerse yourself in a holistic way of life.
Beautiful beaches can be reached in just a few minutes by car, and the bustling capital is also not far away.
The combination of luxurious accommodation, exquisite plant-based cuisine and a deep respect for the environment and animals makes Koukoumi a unique retreat on Mykonos.
