Mosquito bites are pretty annoying, especially when the itching starts. To help with this, there are now so-called bite relief devices or mosquito bite pens: These gadgets apply heat (around 50°C) to the skin for a short moment. This heat is supposed to break down enzymes in the mosquito’s saliva, reducing the itchiness.
We tested two of the most popular products: the Beurer BR60 bite relief device, which runs on batteries, and the smart Heat It mosquito pen for smartphones.
Beurer Bite Relief Device Review
The Beurer BR60, alongside products like the Bite-Away device, is a classic in the world of bite relief devices. It’s powered by two standard batteries and costs around 20 euros, depending on the season.
We’ve been using the device for over a year now—in our home garden, on the balcony, and even on vacations with more aggressive mosquitoes.
After being bitten, you switch on the device and choose how long the heat should be applied via a large button: 3 seconds for sensitive skin or 6 seconds for normal skin. To select the first option, press the button once, and for the second, press twice quickly.
In our experience, the device actually helped reduce swelling and made the itching more bearable. The brief heat feels unusual at first, but after a few uses, it’s no big deal.
The batteries seem to last a long time: Over the past year, we’ve used the device more than 100 times and haven’t had to replace the batteries once.
If you prefer a device without the need for separate batteries, the following gadget from Heat It might be more up your alley.
Heat It: Smartphone-Connected Bite Relief Device
The principle of Heat It is the same as with the Beurer device: After a mosquito bite, you hold the heated point to your skin for a few seconds to reduce itching and swelling.
The big advantage of Heat It is that the bite relief pen doesn’t need its own batteries—it plugs directly into your smartphone. You can adjust the heat intensity through an app.
Additionally, Heat It is significantly smaller. It even has a loop so you can attach it to your keychain and always have it on hand.
According to the manufacturer, this device consumes very little energy: A fully charged phone can provide up to 1,000 treatments. It’s available for both Apple iPhones and Android phones.
Which Bite Relief Device is the Best?
Both devices performed well in our test and made mosquito bites more manageable. The Beurer device feels more solid and robust and is therefore slightly larger. While the batteries lasted a long time in our test, there’s always the chance they could run out.
On the other hand, as long as your phone is charged, Heat It’s compact design is a real advantage. However, its smaller size also makes it easier to misplace. For tech enthusiasts, the app integration with Heat It is a neat feature.
