Whether on a bike tour or driving a car, nothing is more frustrating than a flat tire. Especially with my bike, I’ve often struggled with half-broken bike pumps that keep slipping off the valve and barely inflate the tires. In the end, you’re sweaty and irritated.
The new Xiaomi bike pump is supposed to solve this problem: With its built-in battery, it’s portable and can be used wherever it’s needed. I took a closer look at the device and will share my experiences here.
Xiaomi Air Pump in Test: Loud but Powerful
Let’s get the only negative point out of the way first: The compressor in this pump is incredibly loud. You wouldn’t expect such a small device to make so much noise. However, since most users will be using it outdoors, this can be overlooked.
As loud as it is, it’s also powerful. I was able to inflate a flat bike tire within seconds. It takes longer with a car tire, and you can hear the device working hard. But it got the job done without any issues.
One Battery Charge for Multiple Tires
The Xiaomi air pump can be conveniently charged via a USB-C port. Note: The older version still has an old USB port. The latest version is linked at the end of this article.
How many tires a single battery charge can handle depends largely on the type of tire and the required pressure. However, you can inflate 1-2 car tires on a single charge, and for bicycle tires, it’s about 5-6.
Automatic Activation of the Air Pump
What I especially like are the small, thoughtful details: When you place the pump’s hose into the designated holder, the device automatically turns off. Once you remove the hose, the device switches back on.
Occasionally, I had the feeling that the air pump loses a bit of charge after being stored for a long time. So, before going on a longer bike tour, it’s a good idea to recharge the battery.
Air Pump Displays Pressure
As soon as the pump is connected to the respective valve, the current pressure is shown on the display. When the pump is started, it only inflates the amount of air that you’ve pre-set. There are presets for bike tires, scooters, cars, and balls. Of course, you can also input a custom pressure setting.
There are different attachments for various uses: for car valves, bike valves, and an additional attachment for balls or air mattresses. A small fabric bag is also included.
Integrated Flashlight with SOS Function
Another feature is the small, integrated flashlight on the top. It’s not extremely bright, but it’s perfect for inflating a tire in the dark and finding the valve. The LED also has an emergency function and flashes the SOS signal.
Conclusion on the Xiaomi Air Pump
To be honest, I was surprised by the high build quality of the air pump. The materials are very high quality, and the features are well-designed and reliable. It’s perfect as a small emergency companion. The only downside is the loudness of the compressor.
